09. Teacher Participation

Candidate participates in designing, evaluating, and improving opportunities for teaching and learning in an educational institution.

The ways that I participate in my school are:

  • After school Success Club for ELD 8th Graders: after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I stay after school to help 8th grade ELD students complete their homework, prioritize their homework, organize their binders, learn word attack skills, learn about the parts of speech, and more.  I do this with another wonderful teacher and we have seen wonderful results with it.  It started with just a few students (1-3) and now we are getting 11-12 on a regular basis.  We are finding that the students know what they need to do and how to do it but they are missing one step like how to get started or how to use the textbook to find the information.
  • Model Schools Conference:  I went to Washington DC with members of our district to look at the math and Language Arts sequence and determine an action plan based on the information given for the 6th 7th, and 8th grade content.  Our goal was to create an action plan with a timeline that shows what we felt were the ‘problem’ areas and how we were going to fix them.  There is a link to the Model Schools Conference on the side bar.
  • Lenses on Learning:  I am participating in the Lenses on Learning secondary edition, which focuses on math and how to evaluate your math programs.  I am doing this with various people from the building and district.
  • 7th Grade Power Standards:  I helped create the 7th grade power standards that help the 7th grade teachers narrow their focus in instruction throughout the year.
  • Principal Screening Committee:  I was on the screening committee for the new principal at NAMS.
  • Staff Senate: I am part of the Staff Senate which runs the staff meetings.
  • Building Committee: I am part of the Building Committee which helps advise the principal of the building culture and climate from the teacher’s point of view.
